BACKGROUND
- I was born and educated in Auckland, New Zealand. I completed specialty training in Anaesthesia in 1986 and have been a consultant Anaesthetist at Auckland Hospital and Starship Children’s Hospital since 1986.
- My special interests are teaching and researching the management of the difficult airway. I currently have 98 publications consisting of 85 original peer reviewed articles, 1 MD thesis, 5 patents and 7 other publications.
- In 2014 I received a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Auckland. The title of my thesis was “Improving the quality and safety of airway management”.
- In 1996 I started the Airway Skills course for specialist and trainee anaesthetists, intensivists and emergency medicine practitioners in Auckland. This was the first hands-on airway management course in the region.
- In 2006 I started development of the ORSIM bronchoscopy simulator. This patented, award-winning simulator is a unique virtual reality, high fidelity simulator. It is designed to improve and assess flexible bronchoscopy skills of the upper and lower airway. The ORSIM is now sold globally (www.orsim.com).
- I am a member of multiple international airway societies including the Society for Airway Management (SAM), the European Airway Management Society (EAMS) and the Difficult Airway Society (DAS). At these meetings I have lectured and taught flexible bronchoscopy, emergency airway management, education in airway management, airway leads, paediatric and adult airway management.
- I am the Immediate-Past President of the Society for Airway Management (samhq.com). This is an international, multi-disciplinary, independent society established in 1995 and based in the USA. I have been a member of that society since 1996.
- I am the founder and past Chairman of the New Zealand Airway Lead Network.
- I am an Associate Editor for the Pediatric Anesthesia Journal (2019)
